The year 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Indian Arts Research Center (IARC) on the SAR campus. Designed to serve as a permanent home for the Indian Arts Fund collection, whose history spans all the way back to 1922, the IARC was built as a storage and research facility to promote Southwestern Native American arts. Since its establishment in 1978, the IARC has served as a resource for scholars, artists, and most importantly, the source communities represented in the collection. The collection has also grown over the years as a result of generous donations from private collectors and artist fellows. To celebrate this momentous occasion in SAR history, the IARC will host events throughout the year that celebrate the scholarship and achievements of our artist fellowship and intern programs, while honoring the living history and traditions of local Native American communities.

FEBRUARY

A three-part documentary series has been produced by ¡COLORES! on New Mexico PBS in partnership with the IARC. The series features consummate Pueblo potters Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso), Lucy M. Lewis (Acoma), and Helen Cordero (Cochiti), and highlights masterpieces created by the three potters from the IARC collection. Filmed inside the vaults of the IARC, the first part of the series will air in late February on New Mexico PBS.

MARCH-APRIL

Dedicated to the many accomplishments of 1988–1989 Katrin A. Lamon Artist fellow and 2000 Ronald and Susan Dubin fellow Nora Naranjo Morse, we are pleased to announce the 2018 Indian Arts Research Center Speaker Series. Trailblazers and Boundary Breakers: Honoring Native Women in Art examines the indelible impact and explores the often untold stories of Native American women in art. Through lecture and discussion, speakers will share their knowledge and experience in these topics. This series is open and free to the public.

JUNE

Nora Naranjo Morse
The IARC 40th anniversary celebration culminates with a gala celebration event at the Poeh Cultural Center in Pojoaque on June 22, 2018. The event will accommodate 200 guests and will include a keynote presentation by Nora Naranjo Morse, music, as well as a live and silent auction of select work by past artist fellows. The IARC will honor Naranjo-Morse by presenting her with a life-time achievement award for her accomplishments in the arts and her support of the IARC.
